What is breadcrumb schema?

Breadcrumb schema describes a page’s position inside a website hierarchy using BreadcrumbList structured data. Each level is represented by a ListItem with a name, position, and usually a URL. This gives search engines a clearer picture of how a page relates to its parent sections.

A breadcrumb trail should represent a path that makes sense to visitors. It does not need to copy every folder in the page URL, and Google’s documentation specifically recommends using a typical user path instead of simply mirroring URL structure.

How to use the Breadcrumb Schema Generator

Add at least two breadcrumb levels. Enter the visible name for each level and its full URL, then drag the rows or use the arrow buttons to put them in the correct order. Position numbers are generated automatically.

The final breadcrumb can omit its URL. Google allows the last ListItem to omit the item property and will use the containing page URL for that level. Keep the option enabled when the final row represents the current page.

Breadcrumb schema tips

Keep breadcrumb labels short and understandable. Use canonical URLs, avoid duplicate levels, and make sure the trail reflects navigation users can reasonably follow on the website. Do not add fake categories or pages only for structured data.

After adding the JSON-LD to your page, test the live URL with Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema.org Validator. Valid structured data can help search engines understand page hierarchy, but it does not guarantee a particular search-result display.
